Outside the UN

The United Nations General Assembly held its 81st annual session this week. Not surprisingly, the meeting attracted a number of groups who wanted to address issues facing those who remained in their ancestral homelands. I was fortunate enough to be in New York City to attend several of those demonstrations. Here are my thoughts about and images about what transpired.

The Money Shot

During the four days preceding Donald J. Trump’s military parade celebrating the U.S. Army’s 250th Birthday and his 79th birthday, I spent considerable time walking the streets of Washington, D.C. (when I was not on Capitol Hill advocating for Ukraine). Assuming the role of street photographer, I captured demonstrations, press conferences and other First Amendment activity. Here are my thoughts about and images of the many delights I encountered.

Peruvian Protest

While headed north from the Lower East Side, I found myself in New York City’s Union Square today, where about 25 demonstrators were holding a rally in support of Peruvian President Pedro Castillo Terrones, who was ousted from office and imprisoned during a December 7, 2022 coup. Here are my thoughts about and images from this demonstration.

Hunger Strike Outside the White House

While in Washington, D.C. this past week, I stumbled upon several Uyghur activists across the street from the White House. Four of the demonstrators had begun a hunger strike two days earlier. New Jersey Congressman Christopher Smith was the featured speaker. Although the gathering was small, it was one of the more emotional demonstrations I have attended. Here are my thoughts and images.
