Last Sunday, following the Ukrainian demonstration outside the Wrigley Building, members of Chicago’s Russian Community marked the 1000th day Russian dissident Alexei Navalny’s captivity at the hands of Vladimir Putin. Here are my thoughts about and images from this demonstration.
Remembering Azovstal
This past Sunday, I attended an unusually small demonstration by members of Chicago’s Ukrainian Community. Some in attendance were recent émigrés. They were demanding that Russia release 500 prisoners who surrendered following the siege of the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol, Ukraine. According to one report, between 5,000 and 8,000 people filled the streets of Chicago last Saturday in support of the Palestinian people. September 16, 2023 marks the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death while she was held in the custody of Iranian authorities. Chicago’s Iranian community held a rally today at Buckingham Fountain to honor Amini and others who have died while in Iranian custody or during the ensuing protests. Unbreakable Nation
Saturday afternoon Chicago’s Ukrainian Community celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day with a march, followed by a rally along the Chicago River. "Putin Is a Killer"

Amicus Protest
The Seventh Circuit heard a challenge to Illinois’ ban on assault weapons today. Around 9:20 AM, a group of 40 demonstrators held a rally in support of the ban, hoping the three-judge panel would hear them. Here are my thoughts about and images from that demonstration.
Biden: 3 in 1
President Joe Biden stopped in Chicago today to deliver a speech at the Old Post Office, and then to attend two fundraisers at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in the Loop. Although he probably didn’t see them, three sets of demonstrators were on hand to make their concerns known to him: the Pro-Lifers, those concerned with Climate Change, and a group objecting to the deportation of an immigrant who has lived in Chicago for 18 years. Today, Pro-Lifers and Abortion-Rights advocates faced off in the Loop. Dueling demonstrations that thankfully remained violence free. The Chicago Police Department was out in force, keeping the two groups separate.
